omawind
The wind at the boat, now and hour by hour. omawind downloads NOAA's HRRR forecast for the waters around you, decodes the GRIB itself, and keeps it aboard for when the connection drops. Alongside it, the wind NOAA's piers and buoys are measuring right now.
What it does
- Fetches only what it needs. The newest HRRR run, a 3 km forecast that runs every hour, cut to your region and four fields: wind, gusts and sea-level pressure. About 32 KB an hour for the Bay.
- Decodes GRIB2 from scratch. The Lambert conformal grid, simple packing and bitmaps, in Rust. Every value matches ECMWF's eccodes on a real Bay run, and the winds are turned to true north, checked against pyproj.
- Works offline. The forecast stays on disk and says how old it is.
- Measured wind. NOAA's National Data Buoy Center reports, every 10 minutes: the buoys offshore, and the piers and tide gauges of NOAA's PORTS program around the Bay.
- In the bar.

Install
Add the widget to the Omarchy bar; it starts the engine itself. The window runs from the checkout with ./run.sh, and needs no chartplotter.

The region and a home position for when there's no GPS live in ~/.config/omawind/config.toml. Both default to San Francisco Bay.
Not yet
- HRRR only, so US waters only. GFS, for offshore, is next.
- The region is fixed by the settings. It doesn't follow the boat yet.
- A forecast is a model. HRRR can miss the sea breeze by hours and knots, and a pier's anemometer may be sheltered. Look at the water.
